Mason jars or kilner jars as they are otherwise known have a screw top lid with a removable centre disc. Making them the perfect holder for a small cross stitch design. In this cross stitch mason jar lid tutorial I'll show you how I turned my planet earth cross stitch pattern into a padded pincushion style top for my mason jar.
You will need:
- A mason / kilner jar
- Needle
- Cotton thread
- Toy stuffing
- A completed circular cross stitch design - I chose the planet earth which I stitched on 28 count.
- Optional: fabric glue
First gather all the materials and tools you'll need for the project.
Remove your cross stitch from it's hoop and trim it into a circle about 1'' wider than your lid.
Stitch a running stitch around the outer edge of the fabric using cotton thread
Start to gather the fabric by pulling on the thread
Then add some toy stuffing to the centre
Pull the thread a bit tighter and insert the metal circle from the lid, pull the thread tight and stitch to secure
If you want your top to be permanent, you could secure it further by using fabric glue on the underside of lid
Insert the covered metal circle into the ring part of the lid, it should be a snug fit.
Now you can use it as the lid to your jar.
