DIY no sew rainbow tulle skirt
This DIY no sew rainbow tulle skirt can be made in a hour and is perfect when you need a quick fancy dress costume. Zero sewing skills required!
To make the DIY no sew rainbow tulle skirt you will need:
- 1 inch Wide elastic
- scissors
- Needle and thread or sewing machine
- set of rainbow tulle 6 inch by 25 yards
How much tulle is needed?
A question I am always asked when people want to recreate my skirt is how much tulle is needed. There isn’t a definitive answer to this. As it depends on your waist size and how long you want your skirt.
But here are the measurements and quantities I used in my rainbow skirt.
- I got a pack of rainbow tulle rolls which are 6 inch by 25 yards
- Cutting roughly 8 strips from each roll of tulle. I used 9 different colours.
How to make the tulle skirt
- You first need to measure your waist and cut your elastic to this measurement. For a no sew project you will need to cut it slightly longer to knot it.
- Knot the elastic together. If you don’t like a knot, then you could sew it together instead.
- Cut your tulle strips. You need to make them double the length you would like them to be in the end. I cut roughly 8 strips from each roll of tulle.
- Fold the strips in half and then with the elastic stretched around something (I used my waste paper basket) tuck the folded edge under the elastic and then pull the two ends through the loop so it is secured around the elastic.
- Tug the strips so they lay flat around the elastic and the ends are downwards.
- Repeat in rainbow order until you have filled the waistband.
What do you wear under your tulle skirt?
My tulle skirt is very full so you could just wear your normal underwear underneath, however if you’re not feeling that brave. You could opt for some shorts, bloomers or leggings underneath. Or you could also add a tulle tutu underneath for added volume. You can find a tutorial for the tutu here.
