Free French hen embroidery pattern

Download this free French hen embroidery pattern as a printable pdf. Perfect for decorating for Easter or Christmas. Great for kitchen or farm inspired projects.

For my cushion I used printable stabiliser and free motion embroidery on my sewing machine. You can also transfer the design using carbon paper, or simply tracing using a light source behind. Hand stitches I would recommend for this design, would be backstitch, stem stitch and satin stitches.

Printable Wash or Tear Away stabiliser:

Printable wash or tear away stabilizer is a convenient option for transferring embroidery designs, especially if you’re working with delicate or stretchy fabrics. Simply print your design onto the stabilizer using a regular inkjet printer, then place the stabilizer onto your fabric and stitch through it. Once you’re done stitching, you can easily wash away or tear away the stabilizer, leaving behind your beautiful embroidery design.

How to do free motion embroidery using your sewing machine

  • Attach your darning or free‑motion foot
  • Drop the feed dogs so the machine no longer moves the fabric for you.
  • Place your fabric under the needle.
  • Set your machine to a straight stitch with the stitch length at zero.
  • Lower the foot, and run the machine at a steady speed while you guide the fabric with your hands.
  • Play around with moving the fabric slowly for short, tight stitches or more quickly for longer, sketch‑like lines.
  • Build your design by outlining shapes first and then adding texture with organza scraps or shading with repeated passes.
  • When you’re finished, secure your stitches in place with a quick backstitch.
  • Trim your threads
  • Then wash under cold water to remove the stabiliser.
