Handmade cross-stitch bookmark with a colorful rainbow design, finished with green ribbon tassels, placed on top of a floral-themed book cover. Scissors, a measuring tape, and blue crafting paper are arranged nearby as part of the crafting setup.

Make a cross stitch bookmark

Making a bookmark with your cross stitch projects is a great way to use boarders or sections of samplers. Sometimes you don’t just want to stitch on an aida band, you’d prefer to hide those untidy ends away. Then this is the perfect tutorial for you.

Materials

  • 14 count aida larger than 5cm x 20cm
  • Patterned backing fabric 5cm x 20 cm
  • Ribbon

Equipment

Step one

Trim your stitched design down to 5cm x 20cm. My design is from Cross stitch celebrations – Graduation. Cut a piece of baking fabric to the same size.

Right sides together, pin and machine stitch around leaving a small gap to turn out, sandwiching two ribbons at the top.

Step two

Turn the right sides out and slip stitch the opening closed. Use an iron to press the bookmark flat. Cut the ribbon edges into points or seal with fray stop to stop them from fraying.
