3 ways to secure your embroidery thread without knots

When it comes to embroidery and cross stitch the only knots we want to see are French! So which way is best to finish your work, so it doesn’t come undone? Here are 3 ways to secure your embroidery thread without knots.

Pin stitch

  • After your final cross, make a tiny stitch from the middle left edge of the cross to the centre and then repeat on the right hand side. So that they are hidden under the existing stitched area.
  • These micro‑stitches “pin” the tail securely in place.
  • Keep the stitches hidden under the existing thread so nothing shows on the front.
  • Trim the excess thread close to the fabric once it feels firmly anchored.

Loop finish (ending with a looped anchor)

  • Leave a small loop of thread on the back when you take your final stitch.
  • Pass the needle through this loop before pulling the thread tight.
  • Gently tighten the loop so it cinches down against the back of the stitched area.
  • Slide the needle under a few nearby stitches to reinforce the hold.
  • Trim the remaining tail close to the fabric.

Threading under (ending by weaving the tail)

  • Turn to the back when you’re ready to finish the thread.
  • Slide the needle under 4–6 existing stitches, keeping it beneath the threads rather than piercing the fabric.
  • Pull the thread through smoothly so it lies flat and hidden.
  • Trim the tail close to the stitching.
