Background ideas for your cross stitch projects
If you’ve ever stitched a cross stitch motif and thought that the fabric background looks plain or you don’t like seeing the holes of the aida. Why not try adding some different embroidery or needlework stitches to the background.

I’ve been experimenting with background ideas for my cross stitch projects recently. Especially the felt laser cut pennants I have been stitching on. As I didn’t like the holey look when they were hung against a white background.
You can get the free SVG to make your own pennant here.
I chose to experiment with a traditional needlework (tapestry) stitch bargello for my colourful owl design. To mimic the idea of tree bark for the background.
You can grab the free colourful owl cross stitch pattern here.

Then a blackwork embroidery trellis pattern for my ginger cat design. To give the idea of roof tiles.
you can buy from my Ko-fi and Etsy shops here.

I also wanted to have a different texture to the backgrounds, from the cross stitched motifs. So I chose an acrylic yarn in two colours for the owl bargello design and a cotton yarn for the blackwork ginger cat design.
