7 essential moving house tips

The last time I moved house I was six months pregnant and hardly able to walk. I find moving house a stressful business but that time was the worse. I vowed if I ever did move again, we’d do some things differently. Seven years have passed and we’ve started looking again. So with a upcoming departure in sight, these are my seven essential moving house tips.

Boxes

Collect more boxes than you’ll ever think you’ll need. Trust me you will fill them and still need more!

Timing

Start packing earlier than you plan, it always takes ages and it’ll give to time to have a good clutter before you move.

Loft / garage

If it has been in the loft for the past two moves and never at any point been missed. It really does need to go. Keeping object purely for sentimental reasons, can just weigh you down over time. Take a good look through what you have and keep one or two treasured items. Donate or ditch the rest.

If you really can’t bear to part with it all just yet – consider putting it into storage and then reassessing it when you are less emotionally drained from the move. Take a look at Now Storage Reading.

Logic

Think carefully about what you’ll need first when you get to your new home and pack those things last. There is nothing worse than getting in your new place and not being able to make a cuppa, because you can’t find the kettle.

Info pack

Make yourself a little info pack – include in it a checklist for packing, who you need to inform of your change of address, the last meter readings you take.

Hiring help

It’s best to weigh up the pros and cons before you choose to hire a removal company. They can be very expensive but can save you a lot of work and back ache. We’ve moved three times so far and have not used a company. Now we’ve lived together for 16 years and have two children, the thought of doing it all ourselves seems more overwhelming, so we may choose to hire a company next time.

After you’ve moved

Take the meter readings at your new place.

Locate the stop cock for your water supply.

Get a new set of locks fitted for peace of mind that you have the only set for your new home.

Put your feet up and enjoy being at home!
