With the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics, I thought it would be the perfect time to share a free Olympic rings cross stitch pattern with you. Whether you’re an embroidery beginner or a seasoned pro, this pattern is designed to be easy and enjoyable. Plus, it’s a great way to show support for your favourite athletes.

Why the Olympic Rings?
The Olympic rings are a global symbol of unity and sportsmanship. Each ring represents one of the five continents involved in the Olympics, symbolizing the meeting of athletes from around the world. The colors—blue, yellow, black, green, and red—along with the white background, include colors from all the national flags in existence at the time of its creation.
Materials Needed
- Aida fabric (14 count is recommended)
- DMC Embroidery floss
- Embroidery hoop
- Needles (size 24 tapestry needles work well)
- Scissors
- Printable chart (available for download)
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Download and Print the Chart
First, download the printable PDF chart. Signing up on my blog will unlock access to this exclusive content. Once you have the chart, print it out. This will be your guide throughout the stitching process. - Prepare Your Fabric
Cut a piece of Aida fabric to a size that will comfortably fit your hoop, ensuring there is enough fabric around the edges to hold onto. - Set Up Your Hoop
Place the fabric in your embroidery hoop, making sure it is taut but not stretched. Tighten the screw on the hoop to keep the fabric in place. - Thread Your Needle
Cut a length of embroidery floss. Divide into one strand and double it to secure with the loop method. - Start Stitching
The pattern is a counted cross stitch, meaning each square on the chart corresponds to one cross stitch on your fabric. Start at the centre of your fabric and find the centre of the chart. This ensures that the design will be cantered on your fabric. Count the squares carefully to ensure accuracy. - Finishing Up
Once all the rings are complete, review your work. Make sure all stitches are neat and there are no loose threads on the back.
Tips for Beginners
- Count Twice, Stitch Once: Double-check the chart and your fabric frequently to avoid mistakes.
- Use a Thread Organizer: Keep your floss organized to prevent tangling.
- Take Breaks: Cross stitching can be time-consuming. Take breaks to rest your eyes and hands.
