The best places to visit in Herefordshire with Kids – Goodrich castle

Thank you to English Heritage for sending us the tickets*

This year we will having a staycation for most of the Summer holidays with the kids. It got me thinking about how to occupy and entertain them. What I don’t want is to spend hours in the car travelling to ludicrously expensive places to visit. So I wanted to look closer to home and I often tend to forget that we live in one of the most beautiful counties in the country. Why go miles out of our way when there are so many great places to visit on our door step.

So I am planning over the next few weeks to explore and share some of the gems of Herefordshire and most probably Worcestershire with you. Some are familiar favourites of our family and some and new and exciting trips.

Our first trip my boys would highly recommend to any fans of knights and Castles.
Goodrich castle has everything you could want from a castle. A huge moat, turrets with twisty stairs and a dungeon!

Easy to get to Goodrich castle stands overlooking the River Why just outside Ross on Wye. It has a big car park and the castle is just a short walk up from it. Walking up past fields and though a tree lined lane we fist got a glimpse of the turrets and suddenly the boys were off.

You can do an audio tour of the castle and we saw lots of families doing this. But the boys preferred taking their own route through and occasionally stopping so my eldest could read us some of the facts from the signs.

A great places for stories and imaginary play. We were archers shooting bad guys, knights and kings and marauders attacking the battlements.

The moat that surrounds the castle is a dry one and is large enough that you find yourself completely alone in it. I would recommend taking a picnic as its a great spot to sit and eat on a sunny day. If picnics aren’t for you, there is a cafe and shop back down the lane by the car park.

Highlight of the day for the boys had to be, finding out about the castle loos! Apparently there were only three for all the servants in the castle and when the pit was full small boys had to crawl in a scrape it out! This was highly amusing for an eight and four year old.
