DIY Dream Attic Cinema Room

Transforming my attic into a home cinema has been a project I’ve long been excited about. The space will combine comfort, style, and a few extra special touches. This is how we plan to DIY it!

Design process

With any new project, as I come from a creative background, I like to plan my ideas visually. A mood board is a great place to start and these days, rather than cutting and sticking I like to create them digitally. I’ve included in my mood board, inspiration for my cinema room, colour swatches and the wall paper I’d like to use as my focal point.

Creating a starlit nebula ceiling

Our main feature will be a starlit nebula design ceiling. Using peel-and-stick wall mural from Photowall, I’ll create a dreamy, galaxy-like effect that will make it feel like we’re watching movies under the stars. The design features deep purples and blues with sparkling stars, which will perfectly complement the rest of the room.

Peel-and-stick wallpaper is not only easy to install but also removable, so I can switch things up if I want to down the line. The process is straightforward: I’ll measure the ceiling, and order the wallpaper to fit. It’s like a large sticker so there’s no mess involved in hanging it. This should hopefully transform the room into a magical, immersive space.

Daybed for ultimate comfort

Instead of traditional cinema chairs, I’ve decided on a daybed for seating. A daybed will give us plenty of space to stretch out and relax, whether it’s just me or the whole family watching a film. I’m planning to cover it with lots of soft pillows and blankets, making it the perfect spot for movie marathons or just lounging with a good book during the day.

The other benefit of a day bed, it that it comes apart which makes it easier getting it up two flights of stairs!

Painting the Walls Dusty Purple

I’ve chosen a soft, dusty purple for the walls to create a cosy, calming atmosphere. This colour ties in beautifully with the nebula ceiling, keeping the room cohesive. I’ll be using a matte finish eco paint supplier that we have used previously. The matt finish will also help to reduce glare from the TV.

The purple tones will add warmth without overwhelming the room, creating a relaxing vibe that’s perfect for unwinding after a long day.

With the blind drawn across the Velux skylight it will a cosy cocoon space style place that will be where everyone will want to hang out!

77-Inch OLED TV and surround sound

For the best viewing experience, so my husband tells me! We are going with a 77-inch OLED TV. The OLED technology delivers stunning contrast and deep blacks, making movie watching feel cinematic. The large screen size will make us feel like we’re in a theatre, but with the comfort of home.

I’ll be mounting the TV on the a large storage unit that’ll also house consoles and our DVD collection. to keep the space streamlined. Alongside the TV, we are installing a Bluetooth surround sound system for an immersive audio experience. The speakers will be strategically placed around the room to create that cinema sound.

DIY snacks station

The kids couldn’t have a cinema room without snacks! So we plan to setting up a DIY snacks station in one corner of the room. It’ll include a mini-fridge for drinks, a mini popcorn and candy floss machine, and some shelves with cute jars to be filled with sweets, crisps, and other treats. It’s a simple but fun way to make sure everything we need for movie night is right at hand.

Lighting for the perfect atmosphere

Finally, lighting will be the key to setting the mood in a cinema room. Our plan is to use dimmable LED strip lights around the back of the t.v create a soft, ambient glow. This way, I can adjust the brightness depending on the mood—whether we’re watching a film in near darkness or just relaxing with soft lighting.

What do you think of our plan? We are so excited to do this next step in transforming out three hundred year old house into a dream home. It’s going to be so great, I’ll have to start selling entry tickets!
