Low-Cost Ways to Keep Kids Entertained Over Half Term

Half term quickly comes around again and so does my desire to get the kids away from screens and doing anything else! But it can be so hard keeping the kids entertained without breaking the bank. Our go to low cost solution in the warmer months is always a baking day followed by a picnic!

These activities can be spread over two days which makes half term go by much quicker!

Baking Adventures

I think it would be fair to say that every child has at least one favourite treat that can be made easily at home. As a former food and nutrition teacher, I love cooking with my children and even if all they pick are cakes to make. I know that the simple ingredients they use are much better for them then shop bought treats.

My top tips for a good baking day

  • Simple Recipes: choose simple recipes that you know the kids will love. A simple cake batter recipe, can be divided to make different cupcakes to decorate or have chocolate chips added to make a loaf or tray bake.
  • Involving Kids: Discuss the recipes in advance with the kids, look through a cook book or online. Talk about the ingredients. Get them to to the weighing and measuring as a good way to get some sneaky maths in. You can even get them to put the cakes in the oven if they are older, just remember to use oven gloves for putting them in the oven as well as taking them out.
  • Budget Ingredients: Baking needn’t be expensive. Avoid all the premade mixes and icings and keep it simple with some buttercream icing with a little jam mixed in for colour or even cheaper just some water icing to spoon on.
  • Creative Decorations: Children love the decorative side of baking, using pretty cupcake liners and adding sprinkles really makes if feel extra special.

Planning the Picnic

Heading out for a picnic is a great way to get some fresh air and enjoy the outdoors.

  • Location: You don’t need to do far, your garden, a local park or nature trail are all free options. You could also make use of National trust or English heritage sites if you are a member. If you go more than five times in a year, they do make a cost effective way to entertain the kids and many of them have great playgrounds and activities on in the holidays.
  • Budget-Friendly Picnic Essentials:
    • Blanket or a rug to sit on
    • Reusable Containers: Cut down on your single use plastic and pick some fun reusable containers.
    • Homemade Snacks: Pack some of the baked goodies from your baking day along with some fruit and sandwiches.
  • Drinks: Don’t forget to bring some drinks from home as well to save having to buy when you’re out
  • Carry it: pack it all in a pretty picnic bag
  • Decorate: Make the day feel like a party with the addition of some bunting
  • Nature Activities: Make the day last longer with fun outdoor games like frisbee, sack races, or scavenger hunts.
  • Picnic Safety: Don’t forget to make sure you also apply sunscreen, stay hydrated, and follow safety guidelines especially if you are picnicking near water.
