DIY Wooden Frame for Cross Stitch (+ Free SVG Template for Laser Cutting)
I am always thinking of new and alternative ways to display my finished embroidery projects than hanging them in a hoop. So I took to my Mr Beam [x] laser cutter and made a DIY wooden frame for cross stitch. And you can make one too with this post, I’ll guide you through the process of creating your very own DIY wooden frame for your cross-stitch masterpieces, and I’ve included a free SVG template file that’s perfect for laser cutting.
Let’s get crafty!

Materials You’ll Need:

- Wooden Sheet: Start with a piece of wood that suits the size of your cross-stitch project. I used Plywood. Pre-stained grey for the front and unfinished for the back
- Laser Cutter: If you don’t have one, check your local maker spaces or find online services that can cut the wood for you.
- Sanding Tools: To smooth out the edges or remove burn marks if needed.
- Paints and Brushes: To add a pop of colour or design to your frame, if you can’t source pre-stained plywood
- Cross-Stitch Project: Of course, your beautiful cross-stitch creation.
- Wood glue: to secure the front to the back
- Double sided tape: To secure the fabric
- Twine: For a rustic hanging loop
- Wooden beads: these are optional but help the knot to stay secure at the front.

2: Laser Cutting
- Load the Template: Open the SVG template in your preferred vector editing software.
- Check Settings: Ensure your laser cutter settings are appropriate for the wood you’re using.
- Cut Your Frame: Let the laser cutter work its magic. You’ll have perfectly precise pieces for your frame.
3: Sanding and Finishing
- Smooth the Edges: Use sandpaper or a sanding block to make the edges smooth to the touch and take off any scorch marks you may have
- Paint or Stain (Optional): Apply a coat of paint or wood stain to enhance the appearance of your frame.
4: Assembling Your Frame

- Attach the cross stitch: Use thin strips of double sided tape to secure the cross stitch to the inside of the front of the frame. Ensure it is centred and taught
- Secure the Edges: Use wood glue to attach the front to the back, making sure the holes for the hanging twine are lined up
5: Display Your Art
- Once dried: Thread through a length of twine to create a hanging loop and secure with a knot and optional wooden bead at the front of each hole.
Hang it, prop it up, or gift it to a loved one. Your cross-stitch masterpiece now has a unique, handmade frame to match!
Pro Tips:
- Experiment with different types of wood for a unique look.
- Use different ribbons and beads to hang it from for festive themes.
- Personalize your frame by adding your initials, a date, or a short message. You could do this either by laser engraving, painting or decorating with chalk pens.
Now that you have your stunning DIY wooden frame, it’s time to proudly display your hard work and creativity. I hope you enjoy this project, and don’t forget to share your finished frames with me on social media tagging @craftcartwright!
