DIY Sublimation Socks: A Step-by-Step Tutorial for Beginners
Sublimation is an exciting and creative way to personalise your items, and sublimation socks are a great project for beginners. If you’ve dabbled with Cricut crafting, sublimation is a fantastic next step. Here’s a straightforward guide on how to create your own cute, personalized socks using the Sawgrass SG500 and sublimation socks.

What You’ll Need
Before diving in, gather your materials:
- Sublimation Printer: I used the Sawgrass SG500.
- Sublimation Socks: I used the small sublimation socks.
- Sublimation Paper and Ink: Make sure your printer is loaded with sublimation ink and paper.
- Heat Press: Essential for transferring your design to the socks. I used the Cricut Easypress 3
- Sock Jig: I made a simple jig from a piece of scrap wood to stretch the socks while pressing.
- Design File: I used my cute panda PNG design, which you can download here.
Step-by-Step Guide
Prepare Your Design First, you’ll need a design. I used a cute panda PNG file that I designed myself. Once you have your design, adjust it to fit the size of your socks using graphic design software.
Print Your Design Load the sublimation paper into your Sawgrass SG500 printer and print your design. Make sure to print in reverse (mirror image) so that it transfers correctly onto the socks. I found that tearing the edges of the paper helps to avoid any unwanted lines or marks during the pressing process.
Prepare the Socks Place the socks on your jig. Stretching the socks ensures the design doesn’t get distorted when worn. If you don’t have a professional sock jig, a piece of scrap wood can work just fine. Just make sure it fits snugly inside the socks to keep them flat and stretched.

Position the Design Position the printed design onto the sock. Because my motifs were small, I didn’t need to use heat tape to hold the paper in place. Make sure the design is exactly where you want it. I used the half face at the toe section and the full face on the ankle, ensuring they went on opposite ankles for each sock.
Press the Socks Preheat your heat press to 190°C (375°F). Place the sock with the design face down on your heat mat. Cover it with a piece of parchment paper to protect your press from any ink bleed. Press for 60 seconds with medium pressure.

Remove and Cool Carefully remove the socks from the press and allow them to cool. Once they’ve cooled, take off the jig, and your cute, personalized sublimation socks are ready to wear!

Tips for Beginners
- Design Ideas: If you’re just starting, consider using simple designs or templates like my cute panda PNG. They’re easy to work with and look great on socks.
- Avoiding Marks: Tearing the edges of your sublimation paper can help prevent harsh lines. This tip is especially handy when working with smaller motifs.
- Stretching: Ensuring your socks are properly stretched on a jig will help maintain the integrity of your design when the socks are worn.
Why Try Sublimation Socks?
Sublimation socks are not only fun to make but also a fantastic way to create personalized gifts or unique items to sell. They are a great introduction to sublimation for beginners and can be an enjoyable project for anyone looking to expand their crafting skills beyond Cricut.
