How to create a watercolour quote page with nature-inspired borders
I love filling my sketchbook pages with watercolour illustration and I am often inspired by my morning walks. At first I was nervous to combine it with hand lettering, not feeling confident enough about my style. But it doesn’t have to be perfect! Painting quotes can be a great mindful and creative journaling project. This is how I created a watercolour quote page with nature inspired boarders, after witnessing hares in the early morning mist.

Materials Needed:
- Watercolour paints
- Watercolour paper or sketchbook
- Paintbrushes (round and flat)
- Water pot
- Pencil and eraser
- washi tape
Step-by-Step Tutorial:
- Choose Your Quote: Pick a short inspirational quote or phrase that you are currently feeling.
- Protect the edges: Mark off the boarder of your page with washi tape.
- Sketch the quote: Lightly pencil in where your quote will go. This is optional, but helpful if you are a bit nervous about painting lettering.
- Paint the Border: Pre wet the paints to activate the colour and then use greens, browns, and golds to paint grasses, stalks of wheat, and leaves around the edges.
- Add the Lettering:
Once the boarder is dry, use your brush letter your quote in the centre. A loose, handwritten style complements the organic border. - Finishing Touches:
Add small dots, berries, or seed shapes to fill out the space. You can also deepen shadows or highlights.
