How to make a cross stitch keychain
This cross stitch keychain is a quick, satisfying project that turns a small stitched design into something useful. I used my free Blue Bird Cross Stitch Pattern stitched onto vinyl aida, and finished it off with self-adhesive felt and a ribbon loop.
What You’ll Need
- Free Blue Bird Cross Stitch Pattern
- Vinyl aida
- Embroidery floss
- Tapestry needle
- Small scissors
- Self-adhesive felt
- Ribbon (for the hanging loop)
- Double-sided tape dispenser
- Pen or pencil
- Keyring
How to Make It
1. Stitch the Design
Stitch the Blue Bird pattern onto vinyl aida using two strands of embroidery floss. Vinyl aida is great for keychains, it’s flexible, doesn’t fray, and gives a clean finish. If you prefer the snail pattern. You can grab it free from my ko-fi shop
2. Trim Around the Design
Carefully cut around the finished design, leaving a small border—about 1 to 2 holes beyond the stitching.
3. Trace the Backing
Place your stitched piece face down on the paper side of the self-adhesive felt. Use a pen or pencil to trace the shape of your cross stitch design.
4. Cut Out the Felt
Cut just inside the line you’ve drawn so the felt won’t overhang the edge. Set it aside while you prepare the loop.
5. Add the Ribbon Loop
Now cut a short piece of ribbon, thread it through the key ring and fold it into a loop. Use double-sided tape to stick the ends of the ribbon together and to the back of your stitched piece, positioning it where you want the loop to sit. This will be held securely once the felt is applied.
6. Stick on the Felt Backing
Peel off the paper backing from your felt and carefully press it over the back of your stitching, sandwiching the ribbon ends. Press down firmly all over to secure.
