DIY yarn scrap pom poms
Did you know you can make your own yarn scrap pom poms? It’s so easy and all you need is a felting needle! Then you can easily make co-ordinating pom poms to match your knitted or crocheted projects.

You will need:
- Yarn scraps (single or multi colour)
- Felting needle
- Optional – needle and thread for stringing or attaching to projects
How to make yarn scrap pom poms
- Gather your yarn scraps, any size pieces will do, as long as they are long enough to scrunch into a ball. If you have very small clippings, you can add them to the centre and scrunch longer pieces around them to trap them.
- Once you’ve got it roughly scrunched into a ball shape, start piercing the ball of scraps with the needle felting needle. The best way to to do this to hold the scraps between your thumb and forefinger and rotate it as you pierce.
- Take care as you do this, avoiding hitting your fingers with the needle. You can wear thimbles for this, I would recommend the rubber type to allow better grip.
- Continue to rotate and stab with the needle, focusing on any loose yarn ends.
- It will take a while, but it’s the perfect craft to do whilst you watch something or listen to an audio book.
- The pom pom is complete, when not loose yarn ends stick out and it feels firm.
- Then you can string them or stitch them onto other projects.
