Silver clay kit review
I love trying out new crafts and not just sticking to my embroidery and thread crafts. Which is why I was delighted when I was asked if I’d like to put the silver clay kit up for review. Making a shell necklace from Silver Beats and Treats.
What is Silver clay?
Silver clay is made of of tiny bits of silver in a clay binder. You use it in the same way as you would modelling clay. Once fired, the binding agents are burnt off leaving behind the metal form, containing almost pure silver.
What is included in the kit?
This kit includes everything you need to make a silver cockle shell necklace.
The kit includes:
- Full colour tutorial,
- Silver clay,
- Basic polishing equipment,
- Basic sanding equipment,
- 2 necklaces to hang your cockle shell from.
You need to have access to:
- Washing up liquid
- Vaseline
- A gas hob (or blow torch)
How easy is it to do?
After reading through the tutorial I found the process of making my necklace really straightforward to work through. My only issue was I didn’t have gas hob as you need that to fire the clay. But using my cooks blow torch outside on a heat proof mat worked just as effectively.
Age recommendation
The age suggestion on the website is for 10 plus. Obviously with adult supervision and an adult to carry out the firing of the clay.
Price?
The kit is priced at £47.00 which when you consider what you would be paying for handcrafted silver jewellery think is a fair price. Plus you get the added enjoyment of an afternoon crafting and the pleasure of telling people you made the necklace when then compliment you on it. Which I’m sure they will!
Final thoughts
I really enjoyed making my necklace and I can see why silver clay has become so popular. It could easily become addictive. I loved firing it and then watching it come to life as I polished it up.
I will treasure my new necklace even with the little flaw in the shell (which makes it truly unique) and will be looking at the other kits to extend my jewellery collection.
