The Benefits of Arts & Crafts for Children
When it comes to arts and crafts, as a parent, you probably dread having to clear up after your children. They can be messy activities and many parents resort to technology to keep their kids entertained.
However, there are so many benefits of arts and crafts when it comes to your child’s development, so don’t let the mess put you off. Technology should never get in the way of children using their hands to make things and play. I have teamed up with an English summer school to explore these benefits of arts and crafts in detail below.
Fine Motor Skills
Fine motor skills are basically the ability to use the small muscles in our hands and wrists; they help children with activities such as holding a pencil, doing up buttons, and tying their shoes. For younger children, crafting activities can be great for developing these skills, because they involve hand eye co-ordination and levels of manual agility.
Even tearing a piece of paper requires a level of dexterity that can only be developed through practise. By developing these skills through arts and crafts, children will likely become better and faster and other everyday tasks, like using cutlery or getting dressed.
Creativity
It’s important for children to carry out tasks where they can be as creative as they please and use their imaginations. At school, they are so often told that their answers are either right or wrong, but that’s not the case with arts and crafts. They are given the freedom to express themselves without limits.
This is great for children who are quite shy and struggle to express themselves verbally. As parents, you may be able to get an insight into how your child is feeling through their creations. Plus, not only will they have fun, but they will also be able to relax in a safe environment.
Shapes & Colours
Art is a chance for children to work with different colours and materials, from crayons and pencils to paint and glue. As a result, they start to learn how things work and how they fit together. They are able to develop an understanding of how some things are different and some are similar.
Children who have a strong understanding of shapes and colours will help them when they start having maths lessons at school.
Socialisation
When it comes to art and creativity in general, it doesn’t matter what age, race, gender we are. It brings people together and creates common ground.
With that said, children are able to meet and socialise with people they might not otherwise have had the opportunity to talk to.
