What are SVG files?
SVG’s are a graphics file. It stands for scalable vector graphics which means they can be easily resized and don’t lose their quality in the process.

Can photoshop open svg files?
Yes, photoshop now supports svg files. You can choose to rasterise the image to your size requirements or embed as a smart object. Perfect for engraving.
Why do laser cutters use svg files?
SVG files are not the only format used with laser cutters. They can also handle jpeg, png and GIF files. Vectors are what you will need for cutting and raster files with work fine for engraving. The beauty of SVG’s is that that can be scaled without any loss of quality. Just make sure before your upload any svg’s that they have been unzipped if they are in zipped folders.
Materials for Laser Engraving
Laser engraving can be performed on a range of materials, including wood, acrylic, glass, leather, and even metal. The choice of material can significantly impact the final look of your patterned cat design. Wood, for example, provides a rustic and natural feel, while acrylic offers a modern and sleek appearance.
I made my bookmark by scaling the design and cutting from very thin plywood. I kept the finish natural and added a plaited cord to the hanging loop so I can use it as a book mark.

The Laser Engraving Process
- Download the patterned cat design.
- Load your SVG design into the laser engraving software. I have tested this design in both my Mr Beam Dreamcut [x] and my xTool M1. You could also try using it on a Cricut machine and instead of laser engraving, you could have it draw or foil the patterned design on card.
- Set the parameters, such as power and speed, according to your material and design.
- Position the material within the engraving area.
- Initiate the cutting and engraving process.
- Add a hanging loop to make it into a ornament or a cord as I did for a bookmark.
The laser will then trace the design, etching it onto your chosen material with precision.
