I love hand embroidery and have stitched up designs for many years. Since I did my textile degree and specialized in embroidery. But my go to is often cross stitch.
I like the structure and organisation of cross stitch. If you follow the pattern correctly you'll get consistently good results. With free hand embroidery the results are more fluid and you can't expect yours to look exactly like the picture you see.
That is also the beauty of it. It has a natural vintage feel and you should embrace the quirks and feel of your personal style of embroidery. If you are a keen beginner or a more experienced stitcher.
Are these for beginners?
These patterns are intended to be used by beginners and more experienced stitchers. My recommendation would be to choose one of the more simple line based patterns to start with. For example the leaf pattern.
This can be completed using, running stitch, back-stitch or stem stitch.
What equipment do I need?
The most basic equipment you would need is:
- A printer
- A water soluble transfer pen
- Fabric - choose a light colored cotton or linen
- Embroidery thread
- scissors
- Embroidery needle
- Embroidery Hoop
Optional things you may wish to use:
- A light box - these make transferring the designs easier
- A thimble
- A needle punch kit (This is a new technique I am keen to try out. Not really embroidery, more closely related to latch hooking)
How do I use them?
- Download the pdf file to get all the patterns.
- Print out the design you wish to sew.
- Make sure you have a hoop and fabric to fit the pattern.
- Cut the fabric to size.
- Place the design under the fabric and transfer the template using your water soluble pen.
- Place the fabric in your hoop and stretch to tighten.
- Thread your needle with embroidery floss. I separate mine into two strands, when working on hand embroidery.
- Follow the pattern. Experiment with the stitches you can use. My personal favourites are stem stitch, back stitch, whip stitch and French knots.
- Once finished, use water dabbed on to remove any of the pen marks.
- You can then finish the back if you intend to keep it framed in the hoop. Alternatively remove and turn into a cushion or other decorative item.
