A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Felt-Backed Cross Stitch Ornament
Welcome, fellow craft enthusiasts! In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to create a charming felt-backed cross stitch ornament. This project is not only super easy but also a great addition to your festive decorations. So, let’s gather our materials and dive into the world of crafting joy!
Materials Needed:
- Completed cross stitch design (I chose my Christmas robin cross stitch)
- needle
- Felt sheets
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Pins
- Ribbon
- Button
Step 1: Choose Your Design
Select a cross stitch pattern and stitch it for your ornament. Why not take a look at my Free Christmas cross stitch (70 + pdf patterns). Once you have your cross stitch, cut a circle of felt slightly larger than the diameter or your motif.
Step 2: secure
Secure your felt to the back of your design with pins. Face them outwards when pinning to make it easy to sew over.
Step 3: Stitch in place
Using your sewing machine, thread the machine with matching or contrasting thread. Set it to a close zig zag stitch. Position the food centrally over the edge of the felt.
Step 4: Complete the circle
Stitch all the way around your felt, you may want to do this twice if your zig zag wasn’t close enough.
Step 5: Remove from machine
Take your stitching out and check both sides of the design.
Step 6: Trim
Trim any excess aida from around the edges of your ornament. Take care to maintain a clean and even border, giving your ornament a polished look.
It should look like this. You could now turn this into a patch instead of an ornament by adding bondaweb to the back.
Step 7: Add a ribbon.
Hand stitch a ribbon loop to the top. Fold the ends inwards for a neat finish.
Step 8. Add a button
For a fun festive finish add a button decoration over the top of the ribbon to finish it.
