How to Applique Using Felt: A Beginner’s Guide (+ free templates)

This beginner-friendly guide will show the process step-by-step of how to applique using felt. And don’t forget, to grab the free PDF templates at the bottom of this post!

What is Applique?

Applique is a technique in which pieces of fabric are sewn onto a larger piece to create a design. It’s a fantastic way to add unique patterns and personal touches to your crafts.

Why felt?

Felt is a great material for beginners. It’s easy to work with, doesn’t fray, and comes in a variety of vibrant colors.

Materials needed

  • Felt sheets
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread
  • Pins
  • Bondaweb and iron (optional)
  • Your chosen base fabric

Step-by-Step guide

Design Selection: Choose a simple design for your first project. It could be a a geometric shape, or even a letter. You can download my printable templates which include a cloud, flower, lightning bolt, heart and star at the bottom of this post

Cutting the Felt: Draw your design on the felt sheet and cut it out carefully.

Positioning: Position your cut-out design on the base fabric. You can use pins or Bondaweb to hold it in place. Bondaweb is a type of adhesive web that can be ironed on, making it an excellent alternative to pins.

Stitching: You can use a variety of stitches to sew your design onto the base fabric. Here are a few options:

Blanket Stitch: This stitch creates a border that looks like a series of interlocked ‘L’ shapes. To do this, push your needle through from the back to the front of the fabric, then pass the needle through the loop of thread before pulling it tight.

Stab Stitch: This is a simple up and down stitch. Push the needle through the fabric from the back to the front, then back down again.

Running Stitch: This is a series of straight stitches that run in a line. Push the needle in and out of the fabric in a straight line.

Finishing: Once you’ve stitched all the way around, tie off your thread on the back of the fabric.

Congratulations! You’ve created your first felt applique.
