How to do whipped running stitch
Whipped running stitch is a great way to add texture and dimension to your embroidery projects. Here’s how to do it.

What is the whipped running stitch?
It’s a variation of the standard running stitch. Using a second thread (whipping thread) to enhance the original stitch, creating a twisted effect. You can use the same colour thread for a subtle look or contrasting colours for a bolder impact.
Materials Needed:
- Fabric (cotton or linen works well)
- Embroidery hoop (optional but recommended)
- Embroidery needle
- Embroidery floss
- Scissors
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Create the Foundation:
- Begin by stitching a row of closely spaced Running Stitches. Try and keep the stitches uniform in length and evenly spaced.
- Prepare the Whipping Thread:
- Choose a contrasting colour of embroidery floss for the whipping thread. Cut a length of floss (about 18 inches) and separate it into individual strands. I used a three strands for this stitch, so you could see it clearly in the photos.
- Start Whipping:
- Bring the needle up through the fabric near the first Running Stitch.
- Pass the needle under each Running Stitch from the top, using the blunt end of the needle if needed. Imagine weaving the whipping thread around the foundation stitches.
- Continue this pattern, covering the gaps between the Running Stitches. The closer your foundation stitches, the more pronounced the twisted effect will be.
- Finish the Stitch:
- End the Whipped Running Stitch close to the foundation stitch.
- Secure the thread by making a small knot on the back of your fabric.
Why use the whipped running stitch?
- Texture: The twisted appearance adds texture and depth to your embroidery.
- Variety: Use it for outlining, filling, or creating decorative patterns.
- Subtle or Bold: Adjust the colour and spacing to achieve your desired effect.
