Simple ways to create custom cards
Have you ever found yourself in the card shop, searching for the perfect card to find it just doesn’t exist? I have often struggled to find a card that has just the right words to convey my feelings or a card to suit the very specific occasion. Like sorry you’ve been made redundant or I’m sending best wishes as you start IVF.
Which is why designing a card is the logical next step. You don’t have to be an artist, graphic designer or a computer whiz to create beautiful bespoke cards. Here are my ideas for simple ways to create custom cards.
Pick a theme
Think about the occasion you are trying to design for a pick a theme to match. Your theme could include colours to suit, images and perhaps some phrases or style of lettering you’d like to include.
Do your research
Look on pinterest for colour palettes and font ideas. Browse svg cuts and see if there are suitable images or sayings that would fit. There is such a wide variety to choose from you are bound to find something you love.
Design your ideal card
I wanted to create a range of cards to help friends when they are at low points or feeling anxious. To let them know I was thinking about them and to remind them to breathe. So I chose this mandala svg as the starting point to create the cards.
Choose your design program. The svg can be downloaded in EPS, SVG AND PNG formats. To use it for a card I downloaded the PNG format which is compatible with most programmes and has a transparent background.
If you are lucky enough to have Adobe illustrator or photoshop and have the skills to create your card on there fantastic! But I wanted this project to be easy for anyone to create.
So I used the free application canva. It’s simple to set up, just sign up for a free account and the tutorials will guide you through the basics to get you started in designing your own bespoke stationery.
It has lots of templates for different print items you might want to design and all the sizes are already set up so it’s simply a matter of uploading your images and adding your text to create your own custom cards.
I played around with adding borders to the cards and resizing the mandala. I also added additional text to two of the card designs.
The boarders and text I coloured using the palette from the mandala and I think they work really well together.
Now all I have to do is print a few and have them ready to give to friends in times of crisis.
