Design
‘I’ve self-published a book and a kindle version. I did both via Createspace on Amazon. I did my layout for my book using Indesign where I could add my text and images in and play around with how I wanted it all to look. The kindle version needed to be converted into the correct files in order to go into Amazon but you don’t have to pay a fortune for this. I find somebody on Fiverr who did it for a great price and it was ready to upload immediately.’
Marketing
‘If you want your book to be found, it’s critical to market it properly.’

‘I’ve written a very niche book on Atheism as part of my ‘day job’ as a Philosophy teacher. Whilst I had been sharing notes with people I found that these got lost as people moved between schools so felt something always accessible on Amazon would be best so I published on Kindle Direct Publishing – offering both kindle and paper copies. I found the templates on there very easy to follow but the cover design part was very glitchy and limiting. So top tip is to expect formatting to take a while and to have lots of patience! I’m glad I didn’t have a fixed idea about what it should look like. It was more important for me to get it done by the time term started!’
Editing
‘I self published a quiz book on Amazon. Check, double check, and triple check your spelling, grammar and formatting. Also look at how you can continue providing information/service to the readers in the form of a second book.’
I’ve written a book about sawing called “A Little Saw” which is available both print on demand and kindle
I have plenty of tips, here’s 2.
Don’t write and edit at the same time as these use different mindsets. Just write to get your ideas down and don’t worry about the words and structure. Then go back and edit it, and as Nickie says, keep going back to it and checking and editing.
A good idea, well written is not enough. You need to promote that book to be able to get it to sell. Make sure you have plenty of people enthusiastic about the launch before you get there, a mailing list can be a good idea. Organise people to review the book and post their blogs around the time of the launch. Promote your book to magazines and papers to get the word out.
