Step-by-Step Guide – Making Felt Poinsettia Flowers (+free templates)
‘Tis the season to bring warmth and festive cheer into your home, and what better way to do that than by crafting your own beautiful felt poinsettia flowers? Follow my step-by-step guide for making felt Poinsettia flowers. So gather your materials and let’s dive into the world of Christmas crafting.
Materials Needed:
- Red and green felt sheets
- Scissors (or a cricut or laser cutter)
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks or fabric glue
- Poinsettia petal template (download at the bottom of this post)
- Holly leaf template (download at the bottom of this post)
- Small yellow buttons
- Needle
- Yellow cotton thread
- Green pipe cleaners (optional)
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary materials at hand. Download and print the templates
Step 2: Cut Out Petals
Using your poinsettia petal template, trace and cut out the three petal shapes from the red felt sheets. Cut three Holly leaves using the template from green felt. You can experiment with different shades of red and green for a more realistic look.
Alternatively – download the svg files and upload your your Cricut or laser cutter design space to cut out. I cut mine using my Mr beam laser cutter.
Step 3: Assemble the Flower
Start assembling your poinsettia by layering the different sized petal shapes on top of each other. Begin with the largest petals at the bottom and work your way up, arranging the smaller petals on top. If you want to make these extra quick you can use a small dab of hot glue between each layer to secure them in place.
Step 5: Add the Centre
To create the flower’s centre, take a small yellow button or bead and attach it to the middle of the layered petals using a needle and thread. Stitch all the way through the layers a couple of times. This will mimic the appearance of the poinsettia’s distinctive centre. If you don’t wan to stitch it you could use glue to hold the button in place.
Step 6: Add the leaves
I like to add three Holly leaves to the back of my poinsettias, but you can add as many as you like. I glued mine to the back with my glue gun, but fabric glue will work just as well if you leave them somewhere to dry.
Step 7: Optional – Prepare the Stem
If you want to attach your poinsettia to the tree or maybe a headband, adding a pipe cleaner across the back is a great option. To do this lay the pipe cleaner across the back of the flower and add a dab of hot glue in the centre.
Then you can simply fold in the sides and twist to attach to anything you like. How about going a little extra with your gift wrapping and adding one of this beautiful flowers along with your gift tag.
