What are SVG files?
SVG’s are a common graphics file. It stands for scalable vector graphics which means they can be easily resized and don’t lose their quality in the process. You will find them widely available for use with digital cutting machines and lasers.

Can I use them on my Cutting machine?
SVG’s can be used with Cricuts, silhouette and laser cutting machines. They can also be used for digital scrapbooking and printing.
What are svg files used for?
SVG files are used for all manner of design applications. As a designer and cricut crafter. I use them for cut files on my cricut machine and when designing mock ups. You can also use them for computerised embroidery machines and on some laser cutting machines.
Can I use them if I don’t have a cutting machine?
Yes, you can download them and print them off instead. Using them as templates to cut out designs, make stencils and use for all manner of other crafts.
Where can I find free SVG files?
You can find a great collection of free SVG files in my pattern library. Including single line ones for using with drawing, and embossing tools. Ones for engraving with lasers and many more for paper and vinyl crafting.
What programs can open svg files?
Adobe programmes like illustrator and photoshop support svg files. If you don’t pay for creative cloud. Alternative applications would be inkscape or Coraldraw. You can also open them on a web browser.
If you use a cricut machine, svg’s can be imported and opened directly in their design space.
Why do cutting machines use svg files?
SVG is the standard format used on cricut design space and other cutting machines workspaces. Just make sure before your upload any svg’s that they have been unzipped if they are in zipped folders.
What is the difference between a svg and png?
Both are image files, the difference is that a PNG is pixel based as opposed to a vector. If you need to scale an image svg is far superior.
Is it better to use svg or png?
I would always opt for using a svg over a png when creating my designs and cut files.
What are the advantages of svg?
The main advantage of svg is the infinite scalability of the file. Without ever loosing quality. They can also be opened on web browsers, which makes file sharing easier.
What are the disadvantages of svg?
Disadvantage is these files are not supported in older versions of browsers.
They are simplier than pixelated designs as they are cnstructed from points and paths.
How do I convert a svg to jpg?
There are plenty of sites that offer to convert file formats. You could also upload the svg into illustrator or photoshop and change the file format when you click save as.
Alternatively, when downloading from a browser, change the file format in the download dialog box.
How do I create svg files?
My perfered way to create svg files is in illustrator. Either directly drawing or by uploading my design and using the image trace function.
I like to use the line art function to create single line svg’s and the silhouette function when creating cut files.
Then when I am happy with the design I chose svg in the save as dialogue box.
