5 art projects for stress relief

We all have times when the world can feel on top of us and we just can’t seem to get to the end of the to-do list. Often I find that I am actually making the situations more stressful than they perhaps are.

Which is why I often have to find ways to tune my mind out and let it relax. These are 5 art projects for stress relief that should help you to do the same.

Cross Stitch

You probably already know I’m a lover of cross stitch. Getting lost in the world of little crosses, watch a picture build up through sections of colour.

It’s a great project that you can take anywhere and you can work on small or large scale. Check out my cross stitch patterns page for lots of free patterns plus advice and tips on how to get started.

Paint by numbers

I haven’t done a paint by numbers since I was a child. But I remember the delight on opening the little pots of paint and seeing the potential picture waiting to be filled.

Like cross stitch you can work methodically through the colours and watch an image appear before you eyes. There are lots of great designs to choose from and so many styles to suit all tastes.

Pottery

I love pottery and have enjoyed hand forming objects as well as throwing on a wheel. It’s something that incorporates all of your senses and really allows your mind to focus on one task. If you fancy pottery check our your local area for evening classes and pottery clubs.

Colouring in

There are no right or wrong ways to colour in and you need no expensive equipment to get started. You can read my post on How Colouring Relieves Stress and grab some Free Printable zentangle mindfulness colouring pages to get you started.

Watercolour painting

I am fairly new to watercolour painting but what I find most relaxing about it is the fluidity of the medium. You have to accept that you can’t have full control over it and once you do that you’ll find the results are beautiful.

I practice breathing exercises, including a breathing method which uses a pet as a stress reliever. In my case, I cuddle my cat and bury my nose in her fur, then breathe in through my nose for a count of 6, hold for a count of 2, then breathe out through my mouth for a count of 4. While doing this I focus on how my cat smells, the feel of her fur, how warm she is and so on. Repeat this at least 20 times. The idea is to be entirely focussed on breathing and the associated sensations, so that you no longer feel stressed. It is surprisingly effective and I recommend trying it.
