DIY Christmas Cardboard star Ornaments + free templates
As the festive season approaches, you probably find yourself with lots of cardboard packaging. This year, why not add a personal and sustainable touch to your decorations by crafting unique DIY Christmas carboard star ornaments for your tree? In a few simple steps you can create charming and eco-friendly ornaments that will not only brighten your tree but stop packaging ending up in landfill.

Materials Needed:
- cardboard boxes
- Craft knife / scissors (or laser cutter)
- Pencil
- Chalk markers
- Ribbon or string
- Hole punch

Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Collect cardboard boxes and break down into sheets. You can make this project using a sharp craft knife or scissors and the pdf template or use a laser cutter and svg file (I cut mine with my Mr Beam)
Step 2: Sketch Your Designs
Download the template from the bottom of this post and using a pencil, sketch out the designs for your ornaments on the cardboard. I have included two different star designs. Alternatively if you are using a laser cutter, download the SVG file and upload into your laser cutters design space.
Step 3: Cut Out the Shapes
Carefully cut out the shapes using a craft knife or scissors. Take your time to create clean and precise edges. If you’re making these with children, choose slightly thinner cardboard, so they can cut them out with scissors.
If using a laser cutter, set your machine to the settings for the right thickness of your cardboard and cut. Make sure you monitor your laser cutter closely as this material can ignite if cut on too slow a speed.
Step 4: Decorate
Let your imagination run wild as you decorate your cardboard stars. Use chalk markers to add festive designs and patterns. I love the way they look like gingerbread cookies with the brown and white colour combination.
Step 5: Punch a Hole and Add Ribbon
Once the ornaments are decorated, use a hole punch to create a small hole near the top of each ornament. Cut a length of ribbon or string and thread it through the hole, tying a knot at the top. This will serve as the hanger for your ornaments.
