Cutting Your Loom

With the SVG file now in your software, you’re ready to cut your loom. I used 4mm plywood so it wouldn’t bend when I’m weaving. I also cut it to a5 size, but you can scale to suit your own needs. Ensure your machine is set up correctly of your wood, then hit ‘Cut’. Your machine will now start cutting the loom design into your chosen material. Once the machine has finished, you’ll have all the framed you need to assemble your loom.

Assembling and Using Your Loom

Now comes the fun part – assembling your loom!

If you’re new to weaving, don’t worry, it’s easy to get started. First, you’ll need to thread your loom. This is done by running your thread or yarn up and down through the slots in the loom, creating what is known as the ‘warp’. Secure the thread at the back with tape. Once your loom is threaded, you can begin to weave.

Weaving involves interlacing a second thread or yarn (the ‘weft’) over and under the warp threads. This can be done using a plastic needle or a shuttle. As you weave, you’ll create a fabric. The possibilities are endless – you can create patterns by alternating the overs and unders, play with colours, and experiment with different materials.

I found creating my own weaving loom using a laser cutting machine was a rewarding project that allowed me to combine my love of technology and traditional craft. With this cut file, not only will you end up with a functional loom, but you’ll also gain the satisfaction of having made it yourself.
