As many of you know I love embroidery and I also love digital crafts. I am often asked does the Cricut maker do embroidery? And Can the Cricut maker draw on fabric? I’ll answer those key questions and show you how you can create beautiful Cricut maker embroidery in this post.

Does the Cricut maker do embroidery?

The simple answer is no, the Cricut maker and in fact all of the Cricut cannot do embroidery. They are not embroidery machines but then can help with hand embroidery and speed up processes and add a quality to products.

Can the Cricut maker draw on fabric?

The Cricut maker is a great tool for those that love hand embroidery as you can take your digital svg designs and get the Cricut to draw them on fabric. Using a special fabric pen, that can be washed away or removed with heat after sewing.

Before I had the maker I used to hand draw by tracing my designs onto the fabric. The is a completely fine method, but if you’re looking to speed up the process and want it to be 100% accurate then having it drawn for you is a complete game changer!

SVG’s are a graphics file. It stands for scalable vector graphics which means they can be easily resized and don’t lose their quality in the process.

  • Once you’ve got the free SVG file downloaded.
  • Make sure you extract it and then you can upload it to Cricut design space. Resize so it will fit your hoop.
  • Set it to draw not cut and load into the pen holder a fabric transfer pen.
  • Iron your cotton before pressing it to the fabric mat and loading it into the machine.
  • Then set it to draw your design. It has to be the quickest and easier way to get a design ready to be stitched onto fabric.
  • Then you can choose your threads and colour palette.
  • I favour DMC as my go to.
  • Using a combination of backstitch, French knots and satin stitch, follow the design filling it in as you go.

Materials

  • White cotton fabric
  • A selction of DMC threads

Tools

  • Cricut maker
  • Cricut mat
  • Transfer pen
  • Scissors
  • Embroidery needle
  • Embroidery hoop

Instructions

  1. Download the svg and upload into the cricut design space
  2. Adjust the size to fit your embroidery hoop.
  3. Set the design to draw
  4. Cut your fabric and place on a cricut fabric grip mat
  5. Load the transfer pen into your cricut maker
  6. Follow the instructions to draw your design on your fabric. Remember to have centered your design to draw in the middle of your fabric.
  7. Upload the fabric and place into your embroidery hoop.
  8. Tighten and then Thread your needle with two strands of DMC embroidery thread.
  9. Follow your design with back stitch, for single lines, chain stitch for textured lines. Then satin stitch for filling and French knots for raised fill.
  10. Once stitched, either leave the fabric for the transfer pen to disappear or wet slightly to remove the lines. Depending on the make of your transfer pen.
  11. Once complete, tidy the back and then either. Finish the fabric on the back of the hoop or remove and use to decorate something else.
