1 year curl girl method

I can’t really believe that I am already over 1 year using the curly girl method. The time seems to have just flown by, so I thought I would do an update on the health of my hair, my techniques and new favourite curl products.

How to start the curly girl method

If you have just stumbled upon this post and have no idea what the curly girl method is or even if it’s something you would like to try. Visit my six month post for the basics and how to get started with the curly girl method.

Curly girl method before and after

When you’re in the progress of the curly girl method. It’s hard to see a change in your hair. You live with it all the time and the change can be really subtle. Taking pictures is a great way to remind yourself how much your hair has changed. These are the last twelve months of progress. Not everyday is a winner but I’m ok with that as I know my hair is so much healthier now.

You can definitely see the change in hair heath by the shine I get on my hair. Compared to the dull locks of my over straightened hair a year ago. I’m also learning to accept my curl pattern. Early on in the curly girl method I kept getting disappointed that I didn’t have ringlets or really massive full curls. Now I love my s shaped curls and I do occasionally get the odd ringlet too.

Listed below are some of my new favourite products for curly hair. I still use a lot of my favourites from my three month and six month posts too, so be sure to check them out.

Tools – in my previous posts and for most of the first six months of doing the curly girl method. I would have been horrified at the thought of using any tools on my hair apart from my fingers. In the first three months I hardly even touched my hair after it had dried for fear of breaking the curl clumps. Now I know that you can touch your hair and I love to add a bit of volume at the roots. So for volume I use a scalp massager £1.48 in the morning and night. Which feels like bliss when you take your hair out of a pineapple. On day four hair I might also use the pick £1.99 at the roots for a bit of extra lift.

The other tool I have absolutely fallen in love with is my Denman brush £8.50. I use it in the shower on wet conditioned hair for detangling and it really helps with forming great curl clumps.

Recent additions to my shower are the Maui shampoo and conditioner £8.99 each. They smell amazing and I only use the shampoo if I have a build up on my hair from using oil or I’ve adding to much styler. They are super moisturizing and are my go to at the moment.

  • Update the shampoo should only be used for occasional clarifying as it has a cleansing ingredient that shouldn’t be used regularly.
  • Update the conditioner has an alcohol that can dry your hair.

After the summer heat my hair was in need of repair and I really like to use the 3 in 1 banana hair mask by Garnier £6.99. I use it as a hair mask and sometimes as a dry refresh to damp down some of the frizz I get on day three or four.

If there is one thing you should invest in for your curls. It would be silk. My hair always looks great after a night pineappled in a silk scrunchie (£10.00 for a pack of two) and lay on my silk pillowcase my Only curls. Not only do they reduce friction and therefore frizz they also keep your hair moisturized. Plus who can resist the cute pin badges £5.00 – I wear my ‘yes my curls are natural’ pin with pride.

Finally I have a new favorite oil for my hair. After finding some of the ones I had previously used were mixed with silicone. I am reaching for 100% pure argan oil by Harfi £15.00. It’s great combined with a scalp massage in the morning to wake up my roots. Plus as a overnight indulgent treat as a mask before wash day in the morning. You can even use it as part of your skin and nail care routine.

    Hi Ruth
I was really interested in your article above, my 5 year old daughter has the most super curly hair ever, any advise I can find is always welcomed.
In support of anything that could help with taming curly hair and actually in direct need of something, I launched http://www.silkpillowcase.co.uk back in November last year and have had overwhelming success with the business.
With this in mind I wondered if I could send you a complimentary pillowcase and if you would kindly write a review on your blog for me? I want to get the message out there about what a difference silk pillowcases make to your hair, skin and allergies generally.
I look forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you so much.
