Hello September: Free cross stitch pattern

September will soon be here, and with it comes the subtle shift from the vibrant colours of summer to the rich, warm tones of autumn. As the leaves start to turn and the air cools down, it’s the perfect time for cosy indoor activities. To celebrate the arrival of fall, I’m sharing a new design – a free cross stitch pattern that captures the essence of September.

Why this pattern?

The “Hello September” pattern is the next in my hello month series. With autumn leaves scattered within the text, it’s a piece that celebrates the changing season. Choose from two pattern options, with or without backstitch.

Pattern dimensions:

  • Grid Size: 76W x 28H
  • Design Area: 5.29″ x 1.86″

Materials Needed

Before diving into the stitching process, here’s a quick list of what you’ll need:

  • Aida Fabric (14 count): The pattern is designed for 14-count Aida fabric, which is a common choice for counted cross stitch. It’s easy to work with and is the perfect choice for beginners.
  • DMC embroidery Floss
  • Needle: A standard embroidery needle will do the trick. If you’re working on 14-count fabric, a size 24 needle is a good choice.
  • Hoop: Using an embroidery hoop helps keep your fabric taut while you stitch, making the process easier and your stitches more even.
  • Scissors: A small pair of sharp scissors is essential for snipping your floss neatly.

Stitching the Pattern

Now that you have your materials ready, it’s time to start stitching. Follow these steps to bring the “Hello September” design to life:

  1. Prepare Your Fabric: Start by cutting a piece of Aida fabric slightly larger than the finished design. This gives you enough room to work comfortably and allows for framing later.
  2. Place Your Fabric in the Hoop: Secure the fabric in an embroidery hoop. Make sure the fabric is taut but not stretched too tightly. This helps maintain the shape of your stitches.
  3. Thread Your Needle: Cut a length of embroidery floss (about 18 inches) and separate it into single strands. Thread your needle with the thread folded in half and the loose ends through the eye, so you can use the loop to secure your first stitch.
  4. Start Stitching: Begin at the centre of the fabric. Most cross stitch patterns, including this one, have a marked centre, making it easy to align your stitches. Work your way outward from the centre, following the chart closely. The pattern uses full cross stitches throughout, so it’s easy to keep track of your progress.
  5. Change Colours as Needed: As you move through the design, you’ll switch between different colours of floss. The chart clearly indicates where each colour goes, so just follow along. Take your time with the leaf details—they’re what give the design its autumnal charm.
  6. Optional – add backstitch: If you’ve chosen the design with backstitch, once you’ve completed all the crosses outline the design and add the leaf stalks with backstitch.
  7. Finishing Touches: Once you’ve completed all the stitches, carefully remove the fabric from the hoop. If you plan to frame the piece, press it gently to remove any creases, but be sure to use a pressing cloth to protect the stitches.
