Getting Started with the Unicorn Cross Stitch Pattern

Before diving into the stitching process, here’s what you’ll need to get started:

  • Aida Fabric: I recommend using 14-count Aida fabric for this project. It’s easy to work with, especially if you’re new to embroidery, and the holes are large enough to guide your stitches without straining your eyes.
  • DMC embroidery Floss: The pattern uses a few colours of embroidery floss. I’ve kept the palette simple, which means fewer colours to manage and less chance of making mistakes. Feel free to customize the colours if you prefer a different look.
  • Embroidery Needle: A size 24 needle works well with 14-count Aida fabric.
  • Embroider Scissors: Small, sharp scissors will make cutting the threads much easier.
  • Hoop (Optional): While a hoop isn’t necessary, it can help keep the fabric taut and make stitching more comfortable.

Understanding the Pattern

The unicorn cross stitch pattern is a counted cross stitch design. This means that each square on the printable chart corresponds to one stitch on your fabric. If you’re new to counted cross stitch, don’t worry it’s straightforward to follow.

Step-by-Step Guide to Stitching the Unicorn Pattern

  1. Prepare Your Fabric: Begin by cutting a piece of Aida fabric that’s slightly larger than the finished design. This extra fabric will give you room to frame or finish the piece once it’s done. Center the fabric in your hoop if you’re using one.
  2. Read the Chart: Look at the free unicorn cross stitch chart to familiarize yourself with the pattern. Notice the symbols and colors used in the chart—each one represents a different color of floss. The chart is designed to be easy to read, with clear lines and simple shapes.
  3. Start Stitching: Begin stitching from the center of the fabric. This helps to ensure that your design is centered on the fabric. To find the center, fold the fabric in half both ways, and where the folds meet is your center point. Start with the color used for the unicorn’s body, then work your way outwards, filling in the details like the mane, tail, and horn.
  4. Count Carefully: As you stitch, count carefully to ensure that you’re placing your stitches in the right spots. This is especially important in counted cross stitch, where one miscounted stitch can throw off the entire design.

Finishing Your Cross Stitch

Once your unicorn cross stitch is complete, remove the fabric from the hoop (if you used one) and gently press it with an iron to remove any creases. Be sure to place a cloth over the stitching to protect it while ironing.

From here, you can frame your work, turn it into a small pillow, or incorporate it into a larger project like a quilt or a tote bag. The possibilities are endless! Check out my 35 Alternatives to framing cross stitch here.
