Why Make a Cross Stitch Corner Bookmark?
Cross stitch corner bookmarks are a great project for beginners and seasoned stitchers alike. They make perfect gifts for book lovers and are an excellent way to use up small scraps of fabric and threads. Plus, their unique shape means they won’t damage your book pages like regular bookmarks can.
Materials Needed:

Before we start, make sure you have the following materials on hand:
- 14-count aida fabric (4'' square)
- Embroidery floss
- Needle (a size 24 embroidery needle)
- Scissors (for both fabric and thread)
- Template or graph paper (check out my pattern library)
- Cotton fabric (2x 4'' squares for backing)
- Sewing machine (optional)
- Needle and regular thread (for assembling)
Step-by-Step Tutorial: How to Create a Cross Stitch Corner Bookmark
Step 1: Cut Your Fabric
Measure and cut your aida fabric into a one square shape, approximately 4x4 inches and your cotton fabric into 2 4x4'' squares. This allows enough space to stitch your design and sew the edges neatly afterward.
Step 2: Choose Your Design
Begin by selecting or creating a simple cross stitch pattern. If you're new to cross stitch, opt for a small motif such as a flower, heart, or initials. The finished design should fit within the triangle of your folded aida. You can find free patterns here.
Tip: Stick to a maximum of 4-5 colours to keep the design simple.
Step 3: Stitch the Design
Remember to place your design only in one corner of the aida. Secure your thread using the loop start, then begin following your pattern.
Step 4: Create the Bookmark Shape
Once you’ve completed the design, fold the fabric diagonally to form a triangle, with the stitched design on one side.

Step 5: construct

Place the folded aida on top of one of the squares of fabric with the right sides facing up. Then place the second square of fabric right side down over them both. Pin or clip in place and them machine stitch around the edges, leaving one side open for turning.

Optional: You could also hand stitch this.
Step 6: Trim corners and turn
Snip the corners, to avoid lumps when turning. Turn the bookmark the right way out and push the corners out.

Step 7: Close and press
Tuck the raw edges in and slip stitch to close. Then press for a neat finish.

Common FAQs:
Q: What type of fabric is best for a cross stitch corner bookmark?
A: Aida fabric is recommended for beginners as it has a clear grid for easy stitching. Choose 14-count or 16-count aida for this project.
Q: Can I use evenweave fabric instead?
A: Yes, evenweave is a good alternative if you want a smoother finish, but it may be a bit trickier for beginners.
